A NOTE FROM JUROR CHRISTINA Z. ANDERSON
"It was a pleasure to review your submissions. We discussed images back and forth, between us, concept and technique, in relation to the theme of the show, contemporary trends in beauty. The Ghost series images that spoke to me most were the portraits of women from the past imprinted on the present through catalysis, both fleeting and lasting. These portraits were taken at a time when photography was slow and thoughtful, unlike the billions of iPhone selfies taken today. The images of wildlife are artfully crafted as things of beauty in and of themselves, an updated look to Audubon illustrations, though today there is an implied message of the fleetingness of these untouched ecosystems. The beauty of celebration, people coming together with laughter and dance, shows in the Indian Dancers and other images in that series, reminding us of the importance of our traditions to bring beauty into our life.
We thank you for taking the time to submit and Laurie for hosting this exhibition and allowing us to review your lovely works."
A NOTE FROM JUROR DIANA H. BLOOMFIELD
"Thank you so much to everyone who submitted. It was a real honor to be able to review your work. Christina and I talked a lot about concept, technique, individual images, and how those individual pieces work together as a whole.
Conceptually, I found the Ghost series fascinating. I love the image as a dynamic entity—initially fading, then reproducing, and ultimately morphing into a whole other life that offers alternate meanings and perceptions. I admire Mohan’s use of a restrained color palette in these vividly colorful scenes, offering a softer and more
painterly vision, via his tricolor gum prints. The image we chose for his HM. Traditional Indian Dancers, was my favorite. I love the fluidity and softness, and the young girl off to the right, looking straight into the camera.
I appreciated Kimberly’s selenium-toned infrared and toned gelatin silver prints. Point Lobos is a beautifully fluid and serene take on a familiar scene. Willow #2, which seemed the very opposite, suggests to me the chaotic and unpredictable violence of nature. So well done. And Maureen’s bird imagery is a thing of beauty.
Thank you all, and enormous appreciation to my co-juror, Christina Anderson, and to Laurie Freitag of L.A. It was a pleasure!"
