REFLECTIONS IN THE SHORE by Hallie Jordan
(Click on image for larger view)

Hallie Jordan says, "I made these photos at Galveston, Texas as part of a six-month long project exploring the shoreline -- the moment when the waves meet the sand. The project is about neither the ocean nor the beach alone but the very place where they combine for a moment as one.

As I stand at the water's edge I feel immediately connected to the ocean and feeling of adventure and opportunity it holds. The feeling of the waves hitting my feet is an escape in and of itself -- a moment that comes only once, never to be exactly the same again.

I started photographing as a child, helping my father develop prints in a homemade darkroom. Later, I studied photography at Rice University with my professor Geoff Winningham. I worked on several photo projects as a student including a study of Eugene Atget in Paris which became a solo exhibition at the Rice Media Center and the Houston Grand Opera.

I also worked as a freelancer for the Houston Chronicle. Five years ago I moved to New York where my photography has taken a back seat to my corporate job. I hope to bring it back to life now."

SHRINE CIRCUS by Gary Beeber
(Click on image for larger view)

Gary Beeber says, "I grew up in the Midwest in the 1950’s and some of my earliest memories are of drawing pictures. When I was 12 years old my parents bought me a little camera and I actively started taking photos.  As I grew up I became aware of the work of Edward Hopper, Eugene Atget and Diane Arbus. I attended the University of Cincinnati and Miami University where I trained as a painter and also studied design and photography.

Influential in shaping how I see was the drawing class taught by Jack Potter, Drawing and Thinking, at SVA (New York City). He demanded we students see beyond the obvious and to be active interpreters of what we see. This dictate has been a major influence in my pursuit as a photographer.  I perceive myself as a hunter/gatherer, I engage with my world, led by my curiosity.

Prior to my work in photography, my career has included graphic design consultation and design of books, posters and catalogs for major arts institutions in Manhattan including the Whitney Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. I provided similar services to the photography organization Aperture.

I produced 3 documentary films which screened at over 75 film festivals.  My documentary “Dirty Martini and the New Burlesque” led to my producing the off-Broadway show Gotham Burlesque at The Triad Theater, NYC.

I have always been curious about the choices individuals driven to self-expression make. The world of burlesque performers challenges assumptions and perceptions of gender, sexuality and the pursuit of pleasure. This art form melds theater, performance, dance and comedy. It’s historical roots are based in satire and vaudeville. My pursuit to celebrate those who live outside convention remains a constant and my guiding artistic force.

With the landscape imagery, I have become obsessed with the passage of time, what things were and what they are now.  I think about my own mortality."

ROLLING IN THE DEEP by Erica Reade
SECOND PLACE

Review by Curator Michael Behlen:
"My second-place pick is
Rolling in the Deep by Erica Reade. Her image showed exactly what I was looking for when I wrote the original call for entries. The individuals in the image appear to be making their own personal world just outside the confines of the general populace and by extension are able to be truly free. Though the rest of the world is just a few hundred yards away they seem to be in complete peace within the moment they are sharing together. It is a wonderful image that represents so much about today’s world that makes it an instant classic and a new personal favorite photograph of mine."

Erica Reade says, "Summer is my favorite season, and getting to the beach is my much-needed escape from the long work hours and urban hustle we endure as NYers.  I spend a lot of time observing NYC beach-goers; their bodies swaying in the waves, or splayed out half-asleep on sandy towels. There is something about being on the beach that emboldens couples to enjoy more affectionate freedom, their inhibitions less hidden than anywhere else I've observed in the city. We are raw and exposed on the beach, stripped of our clothes, our makeup, our status markers.

My involvement with my couples is one of an observer, recorder and sometimes, voyeur. Beach Lovers is a collection of intimate moments shared by couples I’ve observed at the beaches of NYC, with a focus on Rockaway, Fort Tilden and Coney Island. This series is about the small moments of tenderness between couples, whether sharing a wet embrace, long laughs, or a lazy limb-entwined nap on a beach blanket.

I’m originally from Montreal Canada, and I have been in NY for 13 years. My background is in International Affairs and human rights, and I am now a full-time photographer. I am the Founding Director of the NYC photography collective Camera of the Month Club, an artist member of SohoPhoto Gallery and a Nikon Scholarship winner at the Santa Fe Scholarship Workshops. I am also a beach bum and instant film lover. I am drawn to the ocean and my personal work is a reflection of that.  I am fascinated by the juxtaposition of beach culture and landscape in the midst of NYC’s urban chaos. I have been working on Beach Lovers since 2015 and I am about to embark on my fifth summer of photographing couples. I am also in the midst of refining the series to create a photo book, with the intention of releasing it in 2020.

Career Highlights
Recent highlights include making the leap to full-time photography in summer 2018, working with the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops on a pilot e-learning video series, and founding and growing Camera of the Month Club to a successful NYC photography collective."

NOTHING LASTS FOREVER by Emma Robinson
(Click on image for larger view)

Emma TS Robinson says, "I am driven by a fascination with the alluring and elusive quality of photographs, and the desire to convey meaning and tell stories through still life photography.

Inspired by still life vanitas paintings my personal projects reflect on the existence of things, exploring objects' potential as metaphors for themes including the transience of life and memory.

In my new series 'Nothing Lasts Forever', I assemble and photograph things that I have found, producing new photographic objects.

When I walk in nature, I am drawn to collecting small fragments from these walks - leaves, twigs, pine cones, stones etc. Walking and making are processes which are meditative and which ground me, connecting me to memories past and present.

In creating these images, I reflect on the fragility of nature and memory."

Emma is a still life and interiors photographer based in London, UK. Since graduating from the University of Westminster in 2012 (MA Photographic Studies) her photography practice has included editorial commissions and personal projects.

Emma previously worked as an architect for over ten years and her background in architecture is reflected in her use of the studio as a stage. Her work incorporates making things and photography, working with the still life genre and narrative.

LYCHEE TREE SANCTUARY 1 by Emily Laux
(Click on image for larger view)

Emily Hamilton Laux says of her series, 'Lychee Tree Sanctuary', "The last few winters I have rented a small house in Florida to spend time with my elderly father. The house, its yard and the neighborhood have become a sanctuary during a period of transition and loss.

The yard is a humble acre surrounded by an old chain link fence, the lawn an obstacle course of ant mounds. I sit out back and listen to jazz with my father, or gaze at the marvelous old lychee tree, a reminder of my years in Southeast Asia.

Here, in this fragrant space of lemon trees, laundry lines and childhood memories, I am comforted by the delicate tropical air. And when I spy the bougainvillea tumbling over the broken fence, I am revived by the scrambled-up beauty of decay and new growth.(Lychee Tree Sanctuary is a new work-in-progress. This personal narrative addresses how notions of identity in relation to place can change and be renewed following personal loss. It is not yet up on my website.)"

Emily Hamilton Laux is an artist whose work uses photography to examine ideas in environments and cultures, natural and man-made, and how individuals experience them. She looks for threads of connection between identity and sense-of-place; her recent work has examined ideas about biodiversity and how individuals consciously and unconsciously process the natural environment.

Born in Saigon, and raised in Cambodia, Paris and Washington, Laux has an MA from the American University School of International Service and a BA from Tulane University. Previously, Laux worked in publishing in New York, London and Hong Kong. In Connecticut, she worked as a photojournalist, gallery manager and arts publicist. She has studied photography at ICP in New York, and Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, ME.

Her work Beauty Versus Beauty is currently on view at the Griffin Museum of Photography, and work from Going to Mars is on view at the Beechwood Arts Salon in Westport, CT. Since 2016, Laux exhibited her work at the Griffin Museum of Photography, and numerous galleries in the Northeast, including the Davis Orton Gallery, the Westport Arts Center, and the Ridgefield Artists Guild, among others.

Laux maintains a studio at Firing Circuits Studios in Norwalk, and is member of the Westport Artists Collective and the Ridgefield Guild of Artists. She lives in Westport, CT.

SOLO by Davide Canali
(Click on image for larger view)

Davide Canali says, "Inner demons are a great opportunity to create light in the shadows."

Davide Canali was born in Anagni in 1981. His predisposition for art studies led him to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Frosinone, where he graduated in 2004 with a thesis on Theory and the mass-media approach in relation to the art world.

Although his main interest is directed towards photography and video, he studied sculpture in the Academy, also attending courses at the Academy of Carrara, where he experimented chalk practise and marble processing.

From 2017, some private passages, inspire him in the production of a series of courts on Man, resulting from the interaction between the external world, in which he moves and relates, and the internal world made of pains, desires and resilience.

During his study and research trips in Africa (Morocco) and in Europe, its reportage-denounce were made in suburban areas, where social contrasts are more evident, manifesting an indignation towards all forms of human exploitation in his shots.

MANZANITA BEACH OREGON by David Wong
(Click on image for larger view)

David M. Wong says, "I used to be afraid of walking in the dark- away from pedestrians, cars, street lights and the glare of commerce.

Now I enjoy exploring the countryside at night in search of the moment when electric light conspires with the fading sun, the rising moon, and stars to cast a rich glow over the landscape.

I take slow photographs of the country that reward the viewer with stillness, subtle patterns, and colors that are only revealed to those with patient appreciation."

David M. Wong is a lens based visual artist living in Chicago.  During the day he is an office drone with a wife and two kids.  At night he stalks the darkness looking for stunning scenery.

SHIMMERING PRESENCE by Daphne Schnitzer
(Click on image for larger view)

Daphne Schnitzer says, "I am an ex-lecturer in modern Literature, a Sumi-e lover and an enthusiastic, some would say obsessive, pinhole photographer whose path always seem to lead to a harbor to shoot seascapes from, be it in Israel or in France (so far).

I use various pinhole cameras, sporting either pins or zone plates, in both medium and large format. My first self-published photography book, Vues sur mer, which was printed in Paris in 2018, features 67 square format pinhole seascapes of the mediterranean exposed from Tel Aviv-Jaffa harbors.

It took me some time to find my photographic grail. Although I had already gravitated to the sea shores with my pinhole cameras, it was the discovery of the 4x5 pinhole format and the caffenol processing of direct positive paper which made me get serious about it. I fell in love with it and still shoot it for other subjects, mostly Riverbank trees.

Looking back today at those very first 4x5 images I exposed at the early morning hours on the shore of Etretat, Normandy, and developed  in soft sepia tones later on the same day, I realize that this pebbled shore, enclosed between two mighty cliffs, has truly become my magic island. Holding its first images in my hand - remembering the sheer joy of discovering simultaneouly a wondrous landscape and a ritualized, zen-like photographic process -  still feels magic after twelve months."

RAGGED OCEAN FROST by Danny Degennaro
(Click on image for larger view)

Danny DeGennaro says, "The most exciting work is the work that endeavors to understand. The struggle of understanding is that it's mercurial, and resists strict definition; so perhaps "Understand" doesn't do this sort of undertaking justice - "Catalogue" may be more accurate. "Record" might be even better.

When I shoot, I have no greater goal than to make the picture itself - no assignment to fulfill, no agenda to push. Photography that exists in a conceptual vacuum has never felt totally fulfilling, and I've never believed that photos are an especially good way to tell a story.

With this in mind, text doesn't need to fulfill any rote or rhythmic role - it can be liberated and exploratory in a way that ricochets, supplements, contradicts, and ultimately enhances the pictures. I used a number of different text generators to formulate words and phrases that resonated with me - rather than ossify the pictures by providing the locale, the words and phrases fostered new emotional corridors to wander. In contrast to shooting, which can feel frenzied and exhausting, I was able to luxuriate in the text, picking bits apart and pairing them with photos in a way that didn't feel superfluous.

I'm a photographer, formerly based in LA, currently traveling across the United States. I graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2012 with my BFA in Film Studies."

POLAROID SOLACE by Chris Byrnes
(Click on image for larger view)

Chris Byrnes says, "My work is made from a perspective of an economy of means.  I make work when I can and with what materials I have on hand but of course also collecting for future needs along the way.

Generally humans are drawn to water and to the sea and I seek solace and renewal of art and life explorations along its shoreline.  Water equalizes us all and humans face the same responses in water and about water – floating, swimming, wetness, coolness, terror and potential loss if we get it all wrong.

The works I have chosen have all come at times when I have been in a state of full enjoyment of photography, without expectation, an unknown unique experience of making an image and at a time of immersing my human self into experiencing the medium of photography."

A WINTER'S DAY- DIPTYCH-1 by Ben Malcolmson
(Click on image for larger view)

Ben Malcolmson says, "'A Winter's Day' is part of a series of images which observes a journey I took to escape my birth home, Belfast as I searched for a sense of freedom in Galway.

The work raises questions about the idea of freedom and my own sense of the word. Exploring complexities such as escapism, and reflection upon my own state of self-authenticity.  This on-going body of work uses photography as a tool to engage with the contemporary landscape of Ireland's wild west, whilst exploring its layers of ambiguity through the representation of my own perceptions of identity."

Ben Malcolmson (b.1999) is a photographer born and based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. His practice deals with communication of the landscape, looking at the familiar and psychological complexities of the self with performative-based elements as an undertone. He is currently studying his Bachelor's of Photography with Video at Ulster University in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Ben Malcolmson's accolade has seen him work on set with Vogue Paris, alongside Alasdair McLellan & Adwoa Aboah.
Work from Ben's most recent project was featured in Belfast Exposed Future Gallery 'The Collective', as well as Translink's Portrait of Northern Ireland 'Connections'. He has further undertaken gallery invigilator roles in Open Eye Gallery and Sailing School Gallery, Liverpool, UK.

HRISEY #1 by Ardina Lamers
(Click on image for larger view)

“The strategy of Lamers is intended to break through the prevailing perception of the public (city) space as social space by literally transforming this space into a theatre, where scripted scenes/stories are then acted out. Lamers uses the theatrical in two ways: in the staging of what she scripts to happen at the location and in the orchestrated spatial manner in which she presents her work. Likewise you could read her deployment (or perhaps rather the playing off) of different media in one work or installation as a strategy of alienation-an alienation that establishes distance and blocks easy interpretations…”
