OCEAN STREAM by Erin Gleason
(Click on image for larger view)

Erin Gleason says, "My work focuses on natural environmental landscapes and our impact on it. Our every day actions all have consequences, good and bad. Through my photography I document the negative impacts on the environment in comparison to landscapes that appear void of human impact to start a conversation about our actions. These images bring awareness of our actions and provide us with a choice. My work is made in efforts to preserve nature while providing visual documentation to help change our actions.

Through my practice, I try to use the most sustainable products, minimizing my impact on our environment. For myself, the important part of photography is about the experience, the moment of capturing the photograph, and being in the environment. I believe nature is essential for all of us and I want to help protect and preserve it."

Erin’s work focuses on photographing the human impact on nature such as illegal dumping in Nevada Deserts, destruction of trees, etc. She has worked as a photographer at the University of New Hampshire and taught photography and digital imaging at the high school level. She enjoys the journey and experience of being outdoors, photographing, mountain biking, hiking and hanging out with her husband and their dog.

She received a BA in Fine Arts from Notre Dame College (NH), a certificate in Photography from the New Hampshire Institute of Art and an MFA in Visual Arts from Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Career Highlights:

Photographer – University of New Hampshire

Photography and Digital Imaging Teacher – Cheshire Academy

OFFERING AT THE PASS by Donna Tramontozzi
(Click on image for larger view)

Donna Tramontozzi says, "Bhutan was the first country I visited in Asia.  Three days in the capital city revealed lots of construction, many people in Western-style clothing and some red-robed monks. Apart from some unusual food, I was still grounded in my ordinary worldview.  Then, we headed up towards the Himalayas to Dochula Pass.

At 10,000 feet the air was chilly, foggy and moist.  While my fellow travelers circled the 108 memorial chortens, I stood still and looked.  No doubt.  I was in Asia.  Everything looked and felt like the Asian art I admire - the same mystery, eternity hidden in the deep dense fog.  I started shooting because I believe that Our Dramatic Landscape is where the place and the depiction resonate with the same spirit."

Donna Tramontozzi is a nature and travel photographer based in Boston, Cape Cod and any other places her travels take her. She uses photography to explore the hidden worlds of natural phenomena, paying particular attention to flora in special places.  The dreamy, often abstract quality of her images provides an emotional visual language that illuminates their essence.

Donna has studied at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops and the Griffin Museum of Photography in Massachusetts. Her solo exhibition Optical Shards has been shown at the Griffin-affiliated galleries in Stoneham and Easthampton. She has exhibited in multiple juried shows shown in New England.

(Click on image for larger view)

Dian Hymer, formerly a real estate broker, nationally syndicated real estate columnist and author of several consumer oriented real estate books, left the real estate world several years ago to follow her passion: photography.

For over 30 years, Dian thrived on travel photography. In recent years, she improved her photographic skills taking courses at University of California Berkeley Extension Art and Design Center in San Francisco, and intensive photographic workshops at Santa Fe Photography Workshops and Los Angeles Center of Photography. Workshop instructors included renowned San Abell, Arthur Meyerson and Aline Smithson with whom Dian is currently working on an LACP mentorship.

Dian received BA and MA degrees from UCLA where she was also advanced to candidacy for a PhD degree in Anthropology. In 2015, Dian’s competition winning photo of the Golden Gate Bridge was featured in a local SF Bay Area newspaper. Lenscratch showcased two of her photos in 2017: one on Earth Day and the other on Mother's Day. In 2017, Dian was a winner of LACP’s “The Creative Portrait" Exhibition for LAPC's online website.

Dian says, "The three photos I submit are from different parts of the world. They are photos I return to when I want reminders of our spectacularly beautiful landscape despite what might be going on in the world. They give me a sense of peace and serenity."

OTHER WORLDS by Dawn Watson
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Dawn Watson says, "These images speak to my attention and connection to the natural landscape, whether as you suggestion, it is in my own backyard, (Winter Lorax), far flung places (Climb to the Sky, a kapok tree in Equadorian Rainforest) or the frosted skylight in my bathroom window on a cold winter's night (Other Worlds).

Capturing or creating moments of tension, connection or contemplation, my work is a visual tone poem engaging image, texture, words, form and/or movement to explore our shared psychological and sensory topography, how we inhabit both our interior and exterior worlds.

Concerns about the effect of ecological degradation on our health and way of life influence my work in tangible but subtle ways as I endeavor to make sense of the "both/and" that is contemporary life, the beauty and chaos inherent in each moment."

Dawn Watson is an artist and activist, her work examines the fragility of both the natural environment as well as our relationship to it and to each other.

After twenty-five years as a dancer and choreographer,  Watson transitioned to photography, finding affinity in the visual storytelling offered by both live performance and the captured image. She has exhibited her photographs and artist books throughout the United States including The Griffin Museum of Photography, Albrecht-Kemper Museum, Tilt Gallery, Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, and a solo exhibition at the Los Angeles Center for Photography and Griffin Museum of Photography.

David Quinn says, "Over the years, my interests have primarily centered on creating landscape and botanical images with an occasional venture into architectural and street photography. In many of my photographs I strive to evoke an emotion, raise an uncertainty or create a sense of movement either by isolating key elements or by blurring the subject matter.

These images were taken on hikes in southern California and depict the stunning beauty of various hills and beaches. Public access to such dramatic vistas is a priceless gift that allows everyone to embrace the wonders of our natural world."

LACOSTE by Daniel Roa
(Click on image for larger view)

Daniel Roa says, "The scenery in France’s provincial region is very whimsical in nature. The landscape lends itself as if there is a story to be told there; from a broken down castle at the top of a mountain, to a weathered down château in a poppy field. Each photograph captures this magical, theatrical feeling, allowing the viewers to create their own narrative."

Daniel Roa is an eccentric photographer who loves fashion, traveling, and learning. His experiences around the world have deeply inspired his photography and livelihood.

He also pulls strong influences from his Colombian heritage and loves to learn about new cultures and languages. He is currently attending the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) to achieve a B.F.A. in Photography with a minor in Business Management & Entrepreneurship as well as Fashion Photography. His passion and love for photography has been developing for the past 5 years and continues to grow as he collaborates with others.

Artist Highlights:

Daniel Roa has worked with a myriad of different companies such as: The Campbell Agency, Chewy.com, Maria Yee Inc., Aerial Development Group, and was a finalist in Photographer’s Forum Best of College and Highschool Photography 2018.

KRISTEN F, 7-23-17 -- 04AB by Dan McCormack
(Click on image for larger view)

Dan McCormack says, "I use the extreme wide angle distortions of the round oatmeal box pinhole camera and the subtle digital colorization’s of the B&W negatives to create a series of visceral images. The juxtaposition of the model and the site or props are my response to the world."

Dan McCormack studied Photography from 1962-1967 at the Institute of Design, the New Bauhaus, at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago where he studied with Aaron Siskind, Arthur Siegal, Wynn Bullock and Joe Jachna.

Next, he earned an MFA in Photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1967 to 1970 having studied with Barbara Crane and Ken Josephson. He began photographing the nude with Wendy, his wife while in graduate school. Then for over forty eight years he explored various techniques and processes while photographing the nude as a central theme.

In 1971, Dan co-founded the Mombaccus Art Center in Accord which received NYSCA grants for two years. The center offered classes in photography, ceramics, painting, drawing, house building and mime. The Mombaccus Art Center had local and national shows every month. Dan McCormack curated a show of photographer Judith Steinhauser.

From 1973 to 1975 Dan McCormack was a founding member of the Woodstock Artists Co-Operative and he had a solo show with the Co-op.

In 1975 Dan joined the Catskill Center for Photography and served as Vice President of the Board of Directors for ten years. During that term, he had a solo show at CCFP and he participated by hanging every show with another director for the first ten years. During his time with CCFP, Dan curated several shows, one with the work of Aaron Sisikind, and another of photographers who were teaching photography in a college and another of early digital imagery.

In 1982, Dan McCormack won a NYSCA-CAPS Photography Fellowship with a series of infrared nude images made of Wendy. With that series, he produced a monograph, "BODY LIGHT-Passages in a Relationship" in 1989.

In 1988, Dan joined Level 3 Gallery, a Co-Operative Photography Gallery in Philadelphia as a founding member. He participated in monthly shows and he had a solo exhibition celebrating the publishing of his monograph, “BODY LIGHT”..

In 1988, Dan McCormack became the director of the Art Gallery of the Art Department at the Dobbs Ferry campus of Mercy Collegey. During his year he curated several shows including a solo show of photographer Will Faller and of painter Nancy Ostrovsky.

Dan McCormack has taught photography at Purdue University, Pratt Institute, SUNY New Paltz, Bard College, Mercy College, Ramapo College, Columbia-Green Community College, Somerset Community College, County College of Morris before coming to Marist College twenty-five years ago. He currently heads the Film Photography program at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Dan McCormack began teaching an Advanced Seminar in Photography at the Mombaccus Art Center in 1971. The Seminar next moved to the Catskill Center for Photography for over ten years. In the mid 1980's Dan McCormack teamed up with Eric Lindbloom and they co-taught the Advanced Seminar in Poughkeepsie, next back at the Center for Photography in Woodstock, and then back again in Poughkeepsie at the Barrett Art Center. In 2015 Eric Lindbloon stepped down and Michael Sabilia assumed the co-leader with Dan McCormack.

In 1998 Dan began to work with pinhole camera photography. In 2009, he won the Ultimate Eye Foundation’s grant for Figurative Photography and had his work featured in an exhibition at the Peninsula Museum of Art in Belmont, CA.

In January 2010, Dan McCormack had a solo show at the Photography Center of the Capitol District in Troy, NY. He showed over fifty images from ten diverse series made from 1990 to 2010. In May 2013, Dan had a solo show at the Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. In this exhibit he showed 28 images from his “Nude at Home” series. Then in January 2016 he had a solo show of the “Nude at Home” series at the Beacon Artists Union in Beacon, NY and in May of 2016, Dan had another show with newer images of the “Nude at Home” series at the Arts Upstairs Gallery in Phoenicia, NY.

Dan McCormack currently heads the film photography program at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY where he has taught for 27 years.

Chris Bashaw says, "I have focused on shooting landscapes for more than four years, having practiced photography for twice as long. My landscape work, on the whole, strives to depict the American landscape as it is and as it is constantly changing, whether impacted by natural or man-made forces. My work is also inspired by, and aspires to be within, the ripples emanating from the New Topographic Movement."

STILL TIME TO RECONSIDER by Chelle Delaney
(Click on image for larger view)

Chelle Delaney says, "I love driving and wandering through the landscape and finding images that voluntarily offer themselves up from the natural and manmade environments. My concentration and distillation of these elements are what I believe are imprinted in memory. These imprints range from the odd juxtaposition to the graphic to the painterly that are captured in memory and reshaped through time."

Chelle Delaney graduated from the University of South Carolina, where she studied English Literature. She later studied photography at the School of Visual Arts and the Southwest School of Arts in San Antonio, Texas.

FOLD 1 by Catherine Marcogliese
(Click on image for larger view)

Catherine Marcogliese says, "When I work with landscape in my photography, I am primarily interested in creating an image that goes beyond documentation and gives me a larger scope for expressing my ideas and feelings about the subject matter before me.

The title of this series, Fold,  refers to both the topography of the American landscape of the Southwest, and the process by which the images are made. In this series I am particularly interested in the underlying structure of the land and the power of the dynamic forces which are at play. Here dramatic geological activity, over millennia, has resulted in the buckled and folded rock layers which form the crevices, canyons, and elevations of this region.

The faceting and layering of the rock formations are accentuated in the images by the actual folding and creasing of the original photos, which are, in turn, re-photographed and treated in a way that gives the images an unreal, dreamlike quality while, at the same time, emphasizing the underlining structure of these landscapes. Thus, there is a direct link between the subject of the photo, and the means of production. This reflects an approach to photography that is based on my background in painting and contemporary art.

The freedom to manipulate the imagery gives me a visual language which allows for a more personal way of presenting the subject matter, while expressing my ideas concerning both the subject and the medium of photography itself."

Canadian artist, Catherine Marcogliese, started her artistic career in the field of painting after having obtained a BFA in painting and art history at Concordia University in Montreal (1979). Since her arrival in France (1988) where she now resides, her work has been primarily concerned with photography, albeit, reworked digitally.

In conserving the plastic elements of painting such as form, line or colour, etc., she is able to manipulate her images in an attempt to push photography beyond a straightforward narrative representation towards a work which vires towards abstraction and allows for a more personal interpretation of the subject matter, which for the most part, concerns her vision of landscape.

Career Highlights:

Recent exhibitions include solo shows at the Villa Tamaris Centre d’Art in La Seyne sur Mer, France (2017); Galerie du Tableau, Marseille, France (2017); Histoires Naturelles, Muséum d’Histoire Naturelles, Marseille (2016); The Frontier, group show organized by The Center, Santa Fe, (2016).

JAIPUR 1 by Buku Sarkar
(Click on image for larger view)

Buku Sarkar says, "I'm a writer and photographer who has grown up and lived between Calcutta and New York.

My previous work of fiction has appeared in N+1, an essay in Threepenny Review, Huffington Post, Conde Naste Traveller, Mint Lounge and my photographs in NY Times and Documentum (a new journal edited by Stephen Shore).

I've completed my MA in Creative Writing from The University of East Anglia, UK where my dissertation story was shortlisted for the Curtis Brown award.

I'm working on a collection of short stories about Indians in New York and a photo project with the slum dwellers of the Park Circus Basti, the largest muslim slum in Calcutta.

Photography started as a way to cope with an illness. I still don't consider myself a photographer. I think of myself as a writer first. I'm not interested in what's out there. When I take a photograph, I'm recreating a narrative that is circling in my mind. In that sense, I'm writing fiction with a camera."

ZION STUDY 1 by Andrew Repcik
(Click on image for larger view)

Andrew Repcik says, "Beyond the world that encompasses my daily existence lies something I have become removed from… The “Natural” world; that place which once was our realm, but now serves as a backdrop for family vacations and calendar ready images… It is beautiful in it’s simple honesty, in it’s lack of a agenda, Committee led improvements… Nature is brutal, and it is inspiring, and it is alien, yet also familiar…  And it is far grander than I can comprehend."

Andrew Repcik was born in Northern California, where he was introduced to what many would consider a rural background.  He learned the value of animals as well as self reliance and hard work.

As he grew he was introduced to a world of travel that led to his relocation from state to state through his teen years.  This movement allowed him to see different aspects of America, its people, landscapes and cultures.  During this period he also found a love of books, music and photography.

After graduating high school Andrew had the opportunity to pursue music and tour throughout the U.S.  This period provided the catalyst that led him to Washington State University, where he attained a B.A. in (Pre-Law) Philosophy.  Working in traditional occupations following graduation, Andrew felt unsatisfied and longing for a creative outlet.  This drive led to his reintroduction to photography.

Becoming a vehicle for discovery and a catalyst for understanding the world around him, the camera became an indispensable companion on his travels and adventures.  Reigniting this passion led to commercial photography endeavors and eventually his relocation to Santa Barbara to attend Brooks Institute where he has expanded his body of work into a creative narrative that explores the moral and ethical values of our society as we enter into a new world of scientific discovery.

ZION, UTAH by Alana Perino
(Click on image for larger view)

Alana Perino says, "The landscapes of The United States of America reveal essential contradictions within this country’s narrative of national identity. Official and unofficial American heritage sites draw in crowds of tourists: people captivated by nostalgia. Efforts to engage visitors with a history that privileges a pioneer mythology strip the land of its truth, effectively fencing in a model America, alienated from its history, and enclosed as property for the amusement of docile consumers.

In “American Terrarium,” I highlight the curation disguised as preservation that occurs at these celebrated landmarks. I am drawn to the brief superficial stops of visitors looking to reinforce or challenge an identity that denies this country’s history of settler colonialism. These sites, or as I prefer to call them, terrariums, are artificial landscapes arranged for the perpetuation of the great American myth. Despite this devotion to American exceptionalism, the landscape and its visitors will often betray the trauma of colonization, teetering between the worlds of mythology and erased history."

Alana Perino was born in 1988 and led a split childhood between New York City, the North Fork of Long Island, and the stretch of highway between the two.  She studied European Intellectual History and Photography at Wesleyan University, where her questions concerning the nature of belonging were only further complicated.

After working as a photojournalist in the Israeli-Palestinian territories, skeptical of the privileged nature of her stay, Alana returned to the United States.  Continually drawn to issues of land-ownership identity, she has been completing several road trips across the country to photograph “American” heritage sites.  Alana resides in Oakland, CA, where she works as a photographer, a lighting technician, and when time allows, as an artist.
