Avital Oehler says, "During this pandemic, I found myself starving for nature while living in the congested metropolis of Los Angeles. I also found myself craving the analog form of photography - that is, the process of making photographs on film. So, I started heading out to the open spaces surrounding LA with a medium format film camera; I then processed and scanned the film at home.

There has been something so beautiful and magical about this process, where I control everything from the capturing to the processing of the images - a form of autonomy which might have been at the core of what I was craving."

Avital Oehler is an Israeli-American photographer, filmmaker, and writer. She earned her Master’s degree in Forensic Psychology, worked in academia, prisons, and with law enforcement before transitioning to art. Her artworks lie somewhere between documentary and fiction.

It is beautiful? Is it bad?
It's the Netherlands!
It's the Netherlands... Is it shocking?
It’s the Netherlands at its most Netherlandish!
(Extract of a conversation between Kees van Kooten and Wim de Bie in their Dutch TV show Krasse Knarren, VPRO Television 1994)
In the exhibition *Footnote (2020) photographer Barbara van Schaik presents stories of the Netherlands at its most Netherlandish.

The Netherlands is the third most populous country in Europe (after Monaco and Vatican City). There is no escaping the literal and figurative footprint of mankind in the Dutch landscape. Wherever you look, almost every square meter of available space has been designed, groomed, regulated and carefully demarcated.
Sometimes an individual is reduced to a mere footnote. At other times, they claim their own space and leave their unique footprint. In both cases there can be discord.

And is this beautiful? Is it bad? Is it shocking?

The exhibition *Footnote (*Voetnoot in Dutch) is a series of photographs of largely urban landscapes: stories of footprints and footnotes. The tension between the (public) space as it has been designed and as it is actually used by the individual is palpable. The scenes shown are somewhat abrasive, slightly absurd, and afflicted with mild irony. And yet the photographer never makes fun of it all. She looks at her environment with genuine curiosity and with great affection for this Netherlandish landscape.

Due to the Corona virus, the full exhibition (23 images) is presented in an online exhibition gallery, via Kunstmatrix: https://artspaces.kunstmatrix.com/en/exhibition/1735709/voetnoot

Born in 1965 in Diemen (The Netherlands), Barbara van Schaik is by now a long time resident of Amsterdam. While studying Chemistry she took up photography, analog and black/white.

Though her professional life took her in a different direction at first, photography was always around, moving towards digital and color as well. From urban landscape photography via street photography to portrait photography (and back again). That is the path of her development as a photographer. Her photography experience is largely self-taught supplemented with courses and workshops, and fed by the work of many talented and exceptional photographers out there.

MY HOUSE by Carmen Teixidor
SECOND PLACE
(Click on image for larger view)

Carmen Teixidor says, "'My House' is a digital composition, an elaborate and layered vision seemingly evoking an earthly paradise.  It was created through an open-ended process through which the final image developed in an ever growing  spiraling movement.  Rather than conveying the specifics of reality, the composition revolves around the expression of a subjective world.

It is a collage incorporating many independently created, smaller compositions.

For example the house itself contains twenty scenes.  Each scene is composed of various elements such as photographs, video stills, and even drawings.

A she-phoenix floats above all in a blue sky, and the artist-photographer keeps photographing from her own little dark island set in swirling turquoise waters.

Adjacent to the house are various landscapes created in a similar process.

“My House” represents an alternate reality drawn from the artist’s imagination and subconscious.  She is trying to give form to an inner landscape rooted in her personal experience of life and death, pleasure and pain. In it she has accumulated an entire universe, which she hope can become yours as you enter it."

Carmen Teixidor was born and raised in France.  She immigrated to the US as a young adult, and has lived in New York since then.

She started her art practice as a sculptress and mosaicist.  Later on she switched to photography and video.  Presently her work is all digitized and she mainly works from her computer. In the last fifteen years she has developed a very extensive body of work through which she explored various avenues.  Because of personal and work demands, as well as a serious health problem, she has concentrated on creating new work probably at the expense of exposure.

UNTITLED 1 by Caroline Ousley Nasemen
(Click on image for larger view)

Caroline Ousley Naseman says of her series, 'Not Every Dream Hurts', "One of the defining features of the COVID crisis has been a forced separation from life outside the home.

Cut off from key parts of like, such as work, friends, and the outdoors, we have had to adapt. Throughout my work, I explore the tension and juxtaposition between the beauty, power, and peace of isolation and the intense need for connection that drives us throughout our lives. Not Every Dream Hurts is an ode to a way of life that feels far away and surreal but that we have not yet forgotten and continue to dream of."

Caroline Ousley Naseman is a 21-year-old American photographer and visual artist.
She has traveled to over 40 countries and lived in 7 countries on 5 continents. Throughout her travels and wide range of experiences, photography has been a way to discover the world, fleeting moments, and aspects of the human experience. Her work explores juxtapositions and toys with the border between reality and imagination.

Career Highlights:

She studied creative documentary photography, photojournalism and videojournalism at Speos Photographic Institute in Paris, France. The program was in collaboration with Magnum Photos so she had the opportunity to work with, and learn from, many renowned Magnum photographers.

In 2017 her images were selected for the juried exhibition 'The Feminist Opposition' at the Hera Gallery.

In 2020 her work was selected for the juried exhibition 'Love, Loss and Resilience' at the SXSE Gallery.

A CHORUS LINE ON 3RD by Carol Kleinman
(Click on image for larger view)

Carol Kleinman says of her series, 'Confessions Of An Itinerant Street Photographer', "I can't resist the temptation to wander the streets of this land. I yearn for the moment I come face to face with an irresistible reflection on a window. Or is it a reflection of my inner self?

Reflections seduce me by their interplay of fantasy and reality, the combination of inside images with reflected images, the symphony of layer upon layer of life... all of it merging and culminating in the very personal moment when I click the shutter.

This is real. I do not combine images. What you see is what I saw... reality fusing with fantasy!"

For the past 25 years, Carol Kleinman has devoted herself exclusively to the endless possibilities of her signature medium reflection photography and its seductive interplay of fantasy and reality.

The ultimate goal of Carol’s work is to stimulate the imagination and inspire people to see the richness and depth hidden within their everyday experiences.

Born in Hawaii, Kleinman spent her formative years on the island of Oahu and in San Francisco. She attended the University of Hawaii, Lone Mountain College in San Francisco, and holds a Masters Degree in Fine Art. Her work has been recognized in shows in Los Angeles, Palm Desert, Seattle, Washington D.C. and Moscow, Russia. She resides in Pacific Palisades, California, and is associated with Gallery 825  in Los Angeles.

BIG K by Charlie Tadlock
(Click on image for larger view)

Charlie Tadlock says, "I think often of my family’s yearly trips to visit my grandfather in the foothills of eastern Washington when I was young. Hot days, cool nights, and dusty air defined the best part of every summer.

Now, roaming the American West, I am surrounded by many of these same sights, now in various states of disrepair, and I feel a sense of nostalgia for a time long past, potentially even a time before I was born. Surrounded by Americana and my family history, I built a sense of what the past looked like, without having ever experienced it.

In this body of work I explore this sense of nostalgia, and how these spaces are being occupied by the newest generation of Americans. Is it possible to go back to this time that we feel nostalgia for, and if we could – should we?"

Charlie Tadlock is a photographer and visual artist originally from Seattle, WA, and currently out of Bozeman, MT, where he is a student at Montana State University in the Photography department. His work focuses on Americana, nostalgia, and visual memory. Charlie’s work has been exhibited in solo and juried shows locally in Montana as well as nationally. Charlie has also been selected as a speaker twice for the National Conference on Undergraduate Research 2020 (cancelled due to COVID-19) and has received project grants from the Montana State University Undergraduate Scholars Program.

OASIS 01 by Claudia Cebrian
(Click on image for larger view)

Claudia Cebrian says of her series, '“Oasis”, As a photographer I like to explore the world. Find an oasis to build up a new life. A place to be safe, to rest. Where contact with nature and what the earth provides is the continuity of life, far from the maddening pace of cities, disease and death.

Perhaps it is the survival instinct that makes us look for a place to start again.
We are part of nature, we are the children of the earth.

I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and my journey as a photographer began when I moved to Bariloche.

The art of The art of photography caught my attention and quickly became my passion.

In 2002, I moved to the US and have lived
in Miami ever since. I’ve had the pleasure
of collaborating with names such as
Architectural Digest.

My eagerness to keep improving led me to Maine Media Workshop school, where
I learned from Cig Harvey and in Santa Fe, New Mexico with Aline Smithson.
My photos always begin with a concept
and my main concern is that my images are impeccable illuminated and well exposed.

At times, I try to control a photos
variables, but other times I simple go out with my camera to explore the world
and the result can be magical."

SUMAC AND SNOW by C E Morse
THIRD PLACE
(Click on image for larger view)

C.E. Morse says, "I have chosen 3 shots of my immediate environments close to home & work.

"Sumac and Snow" is what I have referred to as my "boat ramp shot”. While it is not a photograph of a boat ramp it relates in an unexpected way.

I travel all over the US ( and further) looking for photographic subjects.
When I go fly fishing I always cast the boat ramp before I set out in the pond
or lake and again upon my return; ironically, the best fish is often caught at the ramp.
I was headed from the kitchen to my Cumberland studio when I noticed the
freshly fallen snow that was tentatively clinging to the sumac spears in my back yard.

MOON RISING by Dale Niles
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Dale Niles says, "I have taken photos for over 40 years, from film to digital, from wet darkroom to the digital darkroom of the computer.

Photography is one way that I am able to experience the moment and reconnect with myself. I am quite eclectic in the subjects I choose to shoot, anything is fair game. I look to create a story when I shoot or create an image. I like to spin a tale.

My wish is that my imagery creates an intimate conversation that takes the viewer to a place of quiet contemplation because it is my visual representation of conversation and feelings.

My photography creates a legacy of all the things that I am privileged to experience in my time here. The fragility of life is a catalyst for me to do what I can to preserve it one shot at a time and in doing so I hope that it says that I too existed.  I had an accident when I was younger where I nearly lost my sight in one eye and I believe that has made me want to visually soak up everything I see and preserve it.

I was born in Norfolk, Virginia and raised in small North Carolina towns. I spent my younger years moving from place to place as my dad was a civil engineer who designed bridges and my family moved once the job was completed. Since graduating from college I have moved around from Virginia to North Carolina to Tennessee and I now reside in Fayette County Georgia."

Dale Niles is a Georgia based artist born in Norfolk, Virginia. She is known for her diverse photographic interpretations from her black/white and color photographs to her montage storytelling collage photographs.

She received her BA in sociology from Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, NC. Upon graduation she interned as a probation officer but realized this was not her calling.  While doing several other vocations she continued her personnel interests which included painting, sculpting and photography, realizing that photography was her art of choice.

She has exhibited across the United States, Canada and Venice, Italy and Paris. Horace Williams House in Chapel Hill, NC; Brickworks Gallery in Atlanta, GA; and Cochran Gallery in LaGrange, GA.  Her works are part of the permanent collections at MOCA GA. She has had work exhibited at Rfotofolio's Depth of Field Exhibition-Center for Photographic Art, Carmel, CA, Civic Center-South Bend, Indiana and Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL.

Niles has been featured in publications including Lenscratch, Shots, The Hand Magazine, Oxford America, SXSE Magazine, Light and Shadow Magazine

CONTEMPORARY DETRITUS 129 by Dan Gemkow
(Click on image for larger view)

Dan Gemkow says of his series, 'Contemporary Detritus', "The coronavirus has changed how we have to make our way through our daily lives.

It is now mandated in many parts of the United States that masks be worn in order to enter a store or a public place. The massive consumption and disposal of this personal protective gear has become evident in their inclusion with all the other items of garbage seen on sidewalks and streets that didn’t make it into a trash bin. Whether blown off of a full dumpster or simply thrown into the public domain, face masks have become commonplace in the discarded items that litter the landscape. It is a reminder how much of an effect human beings have on the environment in only a short period of time."

Dan Gemkow is a photographer who lives and works in Chicago. He is originally from New Hampshire and grew up in the suburban Chicago area. He received a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Missouri. Since completion of his MFA, Gemkow has traveled through four countries on intercity buses to develop two bodies of work involving bus travel.

Gemkow’s photographs have been exhibited in several galleries and museums including the Newspace Center for Photography in Portland, FotoFilmic PULP Gallery Bowen Island, B.C., the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado, the Kaunas Photo Festival in Kaunas, Lithuania, PH21 Gallery in Budapest, Hungary, Rogue Space Chelsea in New York City, the Masur Museum of Art in Louisiana, the New Hampshire Institute of Art, the Foundry Art Center in St. Charles, Missouri, the Kevin Milligan Gallery in the Bay Area of California, the Black Box Gallery in Oregon, the PhotoPlace Gallery in Vermont, the Midwest Center for Photography in Kansas, the Tubac Center for the Arts in Arizona, and Gallery MM in Yokohama, Japan.

FISHING IN THE FOG by Dean Forbes
(Click on image for larger view)

Dean Forbes says, "Before the COVID-19 pandemic forced a lock-down and subsequentminimal social interaction I often would be out on the streets of Seattle exploringthe urban landscape as a street photographer.

I stopped going into the cityfrom my home nearby due to the pandemic and a hip replacement just prior thatfurther limited my mobility for some months in 2020. I turned to exploring thelandscape of my neighborhood on the shore of Puget Sound just north of theSeattle city limits. The photographs in this submission were taken within ablock or two of my house."

Dean Forbes lives near Seattle, Washington. He is a longtimesemi-professional photographer with varied interests but with a focus onstreet, cultural, documentary and urban landscape photography.

Dean has a full-time job in communications, and he spends most of this free time exploringwith his cameras. Much of his imagery is the result of random, unplannedmoments encountered on the street. He looks for the interplay of light andshadow, gesture, juxtaposition and interesting faces in creating his compositions. His work is predominately shown in black and white because monochrome stripsaway all distractions and leave the essence of the image.

MY TOWN IS ANYTOWN (15) by Dennis Geller
(Click on image for larger view)

Dennis Geller says of his series, 'HOME/TOWN', "The place that I live is in many was totally different from anyplace I have lived before.

Born in the first and sixth largest cities in the country (Brooklyn, NY,  of course)  I had my share of Midwest and Upstate kinds of towns during my schooling and early years, but eventually settled down in a cosmopolitan suburb adjacent to Boston, where I raised my kids.

A few life changes later I find myself in a smaller sleepy suburb, surrounded by more of the same. A nice enough place, to be sure, but without the sense that there were always things happening, and things to see.

When I first moved here I found lots to photograph that matched my mood, but not much has changed in these few years, and I’d been suffering under the feeling that I'd taken all the pictures there were for me to take.

These images attempt to describe the particularity of this place in terms of its essential sameness to other places, at least in the region if not I much of the country."

Dennis Geller came to the art world after careers as a University Professor and researcher in Mathematics and Computer Science, a software development manager, a business news analyst and a High School Math Teacher.

He wrote two textbooks and more than 40 scientific papers to his credit. He started doing photography in 2014 and since then has had 24 works accepted into juried competitions; in the last year he’s gotten Honorable Mentions in shows in Los Angeles, Plymouth, Mass and Winchester, Mass at the prestigious Griffin Museum of Photography.
