AURORA by Kathryn Dunlevie

Kathryn Dunlevie says of 'Femmes Futuristes', "These Femmes Futuristes are viewed as if with x-ray vision – their patchwork interiors hinting at what they might have lived; their silhouettes offering clues as to how they proceed through time.
They are pieced together from fragments of our shared visual history, then situated in anonymous venues from my photographic archive. Suggesting strange possibilities and enigmatic narratives, they inspire unapologetic authenticity and a sense of daring."
Kathryn Dunlevie is a photography-based artist whose work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and internationally. Cathy Kimball, former Executive Director of the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, writes of Dunlevie’s work: "Through brilliant compositional detail and manipulation, she creates disconcerting, inexplicable spaces and scenarios - streetscapes that elude mapmakers and interior settings that are almost, but not quite, right."
Born on the east coast, Dunlevie lived in six different states by the time she was 12, and in Paraguay when she was 16. She has a B.A. in fine arts from Rice University, and studied art history and film at the University of Paris, painting at California College of the Arts, and photography in Madrid. She lives in Palo Alto.
Dunlevie has received numerous awards and fellowships, including two Arts Council Silicon Valley Artist Laureate Fellowships. Her work has been exhibited at FotoFest International since 2002, at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China, at Studio Thomas Kellner in Germany, in the US Art in Embassies Program in Moscow and in Saatchi Arts’ Best of 2014.
Publications reviewing her work have included Spain’s La Fotografia Actual, Korea’s photo + and Germany’s Profifoto, as well as The New York Times, Camerawork: A Journal of Photographic Arts, Photo Metro, Artweek, and Artlies.

FROM HER HEART by Kirk Cypel

Kirk Cypel says, "I'm trying to expose what hides behind my camera's eyepiece.
Individuals express the human spirit in many ways: by overcoming a devastating setback, by speaking out without fear, by expressing a commitment to faith, by struggling to survive, by singing from the heart, and by daring to let go and share the joy of being alive. It’s not always happiness. But there is a beautiful power in facing life’s challenges."
Kirk Cypel is an award-winning photographer. His work appears on various websites, including 1x.
Raised in New York's Greenwich Village, he learned basic photography at his father's print shop. Kirk made rubber stamps for Saul Steinberg. The shop's other artistic customers - Wolf Kahn, Felix Pasilis, Nat Hentoff, and Michael Abramson – inspired his interest in and exploration of the arts. He shoots in several genres but is most interested in capturing real life through street imagery.

BUG GIRL 1 by Leanne Trivett

(Click on image for larger view)
Leanne Trivett says, "I am a visual artist that uses photography to narrate identity in Experimental Self Portraiture and to create images that show how details and color interact in the world.
My theatrical and vocal performance background inspires me to explore self and create characters with dynamic stories. I like to capture scenes from my play, and I also like the out takes. It is my desire to connect to the viewer in a meaningful and emotional way by exploring multiple sides of me: the light and dark, the quiet and the movement, and the smooth and textured.
I use my camera and eye for detail to visit the complicated fringe of my personality and my relationships. Every image I make is a part of my double inner world. I seek a connection to self and the audience in that space of duality, building a bridge through emotion and humanity."
Leanne Trivett is a visual artist using photography to explore experimental self portraiture, obscure elements around her, and how color interacts in the world.
Trivett graduated with a BFA in Theatre from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in NY, NY. Her background in musical theatre and her years of performing as a professional singer have inspired her creation of characters and self expression through images and photography.
Leanne is best known for her colorful and current self portraits, florals, and her attention to details. Her work has been exhibited nationally in venues like Los Angelos Center for Photography, the Griffin Museum of Photography in Boston, SE Center for Photography, and her work can be seen displayed in businesses in the city in which she lives.
Trivett is currently a Gather Pro at Gather Academy, the Host of the Masters Group at the Gather Academy Online, presenting “Unfiltered for the Creative and the Curious” Zooms for 2022, and working on several photography series and projects.

EMPATHY by Leland Smith

(Click on image for larger view)
Leland Smith says, "The “Pink House” series was shot in Florida, pre-Covid, and came to be by sheer happenstance.
Initially I set out to photograph the Pink House as part of a pastel architectural series I was working on. I wanted to photograph the house in simple bright hard morning light – no palm tree shadows, no foot traffic, no car traffic. I wanted the house to be a detailed portrait of itself.
As I waited for the sun to come frontal, I became fascinated by the morning burst of humanity that passed the house - speed walkers, joggers of every shape, over dressed, underdressed, bike riders, dogs led by and pulled by their masters, a lady with her walker, a man on scooter, a 20 year-old something or other drumming to an ear-pod beat.
With the house as background, I started to photograph this parade of humanity, but, given the continual amount of vehicular traffic between subject and camera, that proved harder that I thought. Moments were missed, but in the moments that I captured, I was taken by the exuberance, tone and determination of those who passed.
Going forward, I intend to expand this series as an ode not only to the architecture but to that special breed of humanity known as Floridians."
After years of shooting high profile television commercials, Leland Smith traded truckloads of movie making equipment for an iPhone and a pocket-sized camera.
With unencumbered simplicity and instinctual framing, his images encompass a wide range subject matter – landscape, architecture, still life, abstract. He shoots with no thematic forethought but lets his images trigger collections based on subject, light, color, composition and style.
In striving to capture the image of the present and the unexpected of the moment, he is continually amazed how often disassociated images suddenly blend together to create an unforeseen ad-hoc series.
His work has been shaped by the masters of advertising still photography and by the cinematic style of the classic film cinematographers that he has had the good fortune of working with.
Recently, he has been experimenting with decomposing color and tonal texturing and impact that these dimensions can add to virtually any subject.Leland's photography, like his life, is “a nod to the curiosity of what tomorrow’s light will bring”.

Marta Manning says, "Photography, like no other medium, captures the real, surreal, hyperreal, and imagined."
Much of Marta’s work involves film and alternative processes, which she combines to create a specific mood in her photos. The art is enmeshed with introspective and psychoanalytical components, which allow Marta to explore issues such as traumatic memories, dreams and fantasies, family history, mental illness, and addiction in her work. Marta’s photography invites the viewer to look below the surface, using carefully directed lighting and symbolism to set the tone.
Marta Manning was born in Poland and works as a photojournalist and researcher. Marta has received B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She has also been working as a freelance photographer since high school, focusing on portraiture and fine art commissions.
Marta has exhibited in numerous juried group shows, including at the Charles Sumner School Museum in Washington, DC, the Darkroom Gallery in Essex Junction, VT, and the Quinebaug Valley Council for the Arts and Humanities in Southbridge, MA.

BEST SERIES
(Click on image for larger view)
Maude Bardet says, "I welcomed 2022 in Sri Lanka, and when I read about your monthly theme "the human spirit" I instantly though of the images I took there. I had been surrounded by so much energy, kindness and resilience while roaming Colombo, Negombo or Chilaw that I believe the resulting images would fit the theme.
The project I am currently working on is called Kaleidoscopy. It is a street photography project that aims at describing the swirl of impressions that submerges the traveler when reaching a new city for the first time. Flashes of colors, crowds moving chaotically, countless boards in illegible languages - nothing appears recognizable. Like a kaleidoscope, reality is inexhaustible image creating instrument.
When I first discovered street photography, one of the aspects that attracted me most was the lack of necessity for explanation - no imperative to seek meaning, mystery is even desired. The photographer is free to be spontaneous, follow impressions and intuition, and arrange the surrounding mayhem to produce pleasing images outside of any descriptive framework.
The belief that as an outsider one will be able to comprehend cultural different environments is in most cases hubris, or at best a mere illusion. The images resulting from embracing unintelligibility in turn tell a story about the self: where I found beauty, which people attracted my eyes, which decisive moment grabbed my attention. A sort of mood board emerges out of the confusion that constitutes a better description of myself than any text I could possibly write."
Maude Bardet is a French photographer currently living in the Netherlands. After studying engineering, she first worked in Berlin and then ended up in the Hague, Holland. She always had fernweh - as the Germans say - and invariably construed her jobs as mere tools to finance her travels.
Photography was a constant throughout her numerous trips, evolving from mostly architectural to environmental portraits. She discovered street photography in 2017 during a workshop with Nikos Economopoulos in Ghana, and felt like this was exactly what she had been looking for. Meeting Maciej Dakowicz brought her work to a different level – her images are now more complex and carefully composed.
Guided by light and textures, she tries to portray a slice of the human condition. She likes to use strong colors to emphasize the compositional elements in her pictures. Her work has emerged mainly through online platforms, particularly Instagram.
Winner of a Remarkable Reward in Trieste 2020, of the Independent Photographer "street photography" competition 2020 and of the Street Photographers Foundation awards 2021.
3rd place in LensCulture Street Photography 2021 and in IPA 2021, category street photography.
Finalist in the Independent Photographer "street photography" competition 2021 and in the Observa street photo festival 2021.
Featured in Chasseur d'images in July 2021.
Featured in Miami Street Photography festival in 2019 and 2020, Brussels Street Photography in 2019, Rome Street Photography festival in 2021, in OpenWalls, in Arles in 2020, in the Women In Steet 'Two Way Street' exhibition in San Francisco and 'Double Trouble' in Sydney and Brisbane, in Women Street Photographers exhibitions in New York, Kuala Lumpur, Brussels, Trieste, Chelyabinsk, Hyderabad and Paris, in Venice Photo Lab exhibition 2021.

HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)
Never Edit says, "Watching people has fascinated me since childhood... the variety of their looks, behaviour, expressions, and emotions. I tried to memorize what I saw, using my eyes as camera and my brain as hard disk. When I first heard of street photography a couple of years ago, it felt like I found "home". Saving that split second forever not only in my memory but as a photograph is what I've become addicted to.
When I go out, I have nothing specific in mind, I just shoot whatever I find interesting, and I prefer the candid spontaneous shot anytime over picture-perfect or posed photos.
Living in Germany, I feel restricted by the laws and the lack of good light, so I travel to other countries as often as possible to pursue my passion."
